TEMECULA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Patient Safety Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:PSTX) announced today that a large Chicago area medical teaching facility (the Facility), entered into contract to use SurgiCount Medicals computer assisted counting system.

The Facility correctly recognized the need to adopt new technologies to effectively achieve their patient safety goals which resulted in the Facilitys adoption of the Safety-Sponge System. We anticipate that the Facilitys decision to fully implement the Safety-Sponge System in all of its operating rooms will generate from $250,000 to $300,000 in recurring annual revenues.

We are excited that the Facility not only shares our ideals but, more importantly, has entrusted us to be a part of achieving their vision of improving the quality and safety of patient care. The Facilitys decision to implement the Safety-Sponge System is affirmation of our efforts and commitment in making significant advances in driving patient safety and productivity within the health-care industry. Further, based upon positive feedback, we fully anticipate that our ongoing evaluations will lead to the adoption of our Safety-Sponge System by several other large institutions during 2007, said Rick Bertran, President of SurgiCount Medical.

About SurgiCount Medical, Inc.

SurgiCount Medical, Inc. is a developer and manufacturer of patient safety products and services. The SurgiCount Safety-Sponge System is a patented turn-key array of modified surgical sponges, line-of-sight scanning SurgiCounters, and PrintPAD printers integrated together to form a comprehensive counting and documentation system. The Safety-Sponge System works much like a grocery store checkout process: Every surgical sponge and towel is affixed with a unique inseparable two-dimensional data matrix bar code and used with a SurgiCounter to scan and record the sponges during the initial and final counts. Because each sponge is identified with a unique code, a SurgiCounter will not allow the same sponge to be accidentally counted more than one time. When counts have been completed at the end of a procedure, the system will produce a printed report, or can be modified to work with a hospitals paperless system. The Safety-Sponge System is the only FDA 510k approved computer assisted sponge counting system.
